Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.
For more information on any ingredient, please take a look at our Dog Food Ingredient Glossary
The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

86.00 out of 100 - Excellent
Our unique product ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how beneficial we think a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin:Netherlands
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

Just because they eat it does not mean its their favourite thing to eat or they enjoy it at all, thats not how it works. They already receive their core body of food, killing the insects is intinct not enjoymentRawFeederXL

That like implicating that dogs eating their own poop enjoy it, does not work that way, the smell, Instinct and other issues are the causation not the entity itself whatever that isRawFeederXL

Look, if you want to fed you dog an insect based kibel, no one can stop you, the matter of fact is, compared to other meats they just arent as dogestible, and if insects are an intrest to you for the diversified amino acids your much better just litterally buying raw insect meal or dried insects and feed them alongside other kibel. In fact depending on your dogs needs thats a good ideaRawFeederXL

Unless you really need a cheap way to a diversified means of aimno acids, which sometimes shelthers need to do for dogs alergic to chicken but need varitey, please dont get insect feed, its inhumane and i can say having seen it dogs as a majority dont enjoy itJanis Jöro Ledger

How is insect food any less humane than foods that contain meatRawFeederXL

As its inflicting a bad tasting food with minimal nutritional value compared to organ and core meats on the fog for the sake of baseless ideological agendas eg the idea of enviromentalism, its not any cheaper and unless you have a genuine need for large amino acid diversity and have conplex financial restraints eg shelter then your merley giving your dog infetior food for agenda which is selfish.Walkerlou62

My gsd who is also raw fed has done very well on the insect, she really likes the taste has small firm dark poos and a lovely shiney coat. The food is not only insects but contains fish and eggs also.RawFeederXL

Thats why, its not just insect, its got other core amino acids (Eggs and fish) This isnt the case for the darf insect kibel. Insect can be a cheap diversified amino acid mix great pared with other sources, but on its own it lacks nutrient density.RawFeederXL

My Great Dane has been on DARF Turkey for the past month and a bit, and so far it's great from all points of view. The only downside is that it's pretty expensive in my country (~110E/15kg), but as far as my dog goes he's very happy and healthy with it.Canine01 •8 months ago
This looks like a really good product, especially like that it has millet instead of rice which most other cold pressed foods have. My dog currently has The Only One also by Sabre which is cold pressed too but the texture and feel of the pellets are very different to Darf and others similar and sadly I've tried my dog on many types of cold pressed food brands with similar pellets which, although he likes, always seem to give him some type of reflux problem after eating (bit of white bile comes back, seems like he has trouble digesting cold pressed, I've read other similar comments), The Only One, because it's a different consistency to the usual cold pressed pellets, seems to be the only cold pressed food that doesn't have this effect. Another similar food to Only One is Platinum. A pity as Darf looks impressive.Cazbomb

That’s interesting, my dog definitely has reflux since being on this food too. I was thinking about changing again. Is it just cold pressed or maybe it’s related to raw food in general? One of my dogs has an awful hacking cough now too and the vet thought it was also caused by reflux. I’m going to switch to innocent hound air dried and see how that goes.Charscots

My dog had this issue on WILD cold pressed. I changed to Alpha Spirit and the reflux is gone.
