Mixing bowl composition
This is the ingredients list as printed on the packaging or manufacturer's website.
Think of the 'mixing bowl' composition like a recipe - all the ingredients you would need to put in a 'mixing bowl' in order to make the food.
Ingredients have to be listed in descending order of their weight so the higher it appears, the more there is.
Highlighted ingredients
Ingredients that we believe to be controversial or inferior are highlighted in yellow with particularly low grade, highly contentious or excessively vague ingredients in red.
As fed composition
While the 'mixing bowl' composition is useful for knowing what went into the food, it doesn't always reflect what your dog is actually eating. This is because the processes that turn the ingredients into the finished pet food can significantly alter the relative weights of the ingredients.
For this reason we've calculated the approximate 'as fed' percentages for the main ingredient categories in the finished product.
Please note that these figures are very approximate. They are estimates based on the information provided by the manufacturer in the ingredients list so the clearer the terminology and the more percentages they provide, the more accurate our estimates will be. Wherever information is lacking, we always assume the worst.
Ingredient categories
◉ Meat ingredients: includes all meat and fish ingredients except isolated fats/oils.
◉Added oils and fats: includes all isolated oil and fat ingredients.
◉ Carb-rich ingredients: includes all ingredients derived from grains, pseudo-grains, potatoes and other starchy root vegetables, sweet potato and legumes (except whole peas which are categorised under fruit and veg) except for isolated protein and extracted oils. Also includes fibre supplements.
◉ Fruit and veg: includes all whole vegetables and fruits.
◉ Other: all other ingredients. Mostly made up by nutritional supplements and additives.
For more information on any ingredient, please take a look at our Dog Food Ingredient Glossary
The dry matter level of a nutrient is the percentage there would be in the food if all of the water was removed.
With water taken out of the equation, these figures allow the nutrient levels of foods of different types (like wet and dry) to be compared on an even playing field.

78.45 out of 100 - Good
Our unique product ratings are calculated based on a number of characteristics including the quality and quantity of the stated ingredients, certain nutritional and technological additives and the processing methods used to create the food. They are designed to indicate how beneficial we think a food is likely to be for the majority of dogs when fed on a daily basis for an extended period. Click here for more information
Country of origin:Germany
A technological additive is any substance added to a pet food "for a technological purpose and which favourably affects the characteristics of feed".
The most common categories of technological additives include preservatives and antioxidants, gelling agents and thickeners and probiotics.
While the primary effects of technoloical additives are certainly 'favourable' (increased shelf life in the case of preservatives & antioxidants, better food texture and consistency in the case of gelling agents and thickeners etc.) some have been linked to health problems in pets and should be treated with caution.
Unfortunately, many technological additives do not have to be declared by the manufacturer so just because they do not appear on the label does not necessarily mean they are not in the food. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer directly exactly what technological additives their foods contain.

We've been feeding our two boys Guru for 3 years now and I've got to say they have never been in better shape. Changed over from what I thought was a premium kibble and have never looked back. Their poops used to be runny and they would scratch. Now their poops are firm, not too big to scoop, and their coats are really shiny. Customer service is also first class. Rang and spoke to a lovely lady who took time to answer my questions of which there were many. Am very pleased and would highly recommend.Daniel Nash •2 years ago
Dog has recently been diagnosed with potentially a mast cell tumor I will be discontinuing use of this food due to its extremely high carbohydrate content which is studied and understood to fuel cancer and also 50% carbs is far far from what a dog would be naturally eating just full of filler at the end of the day the cons far outweigh the supposed cold pressed benefitsO C •2 years ago
my 2 frenchies absolutly love this stuff, i thought they would be put off by the shape but its gone in seconds. We were using eden 80/20 but they had runny poos all the time. from the first day i started to add guru to their meals there poos were instantly firm.Meg •7 years ago
We have an 11 month old sproodle (springer x poodle), Luna, who is a very fussy eater. We have been through so many different foods, acana, James wellbeloved, skinners, simple, fish4dogs etc. But she was never keen for any of them and would often leave her food. We found that she liked applaws food and we had her on this from about 6 months onwards. Being the mix that she is, she's a very excitable dog anyway - but she would never sit down and chill for a moment! I came across guru in September and thought we'd give it a go so I ordered a sample. Luna went mad for it! So we ordered a large bag of it. We still had a big bag of applaws left over so started mixing the two together. When we ran out of applaws a few months later we carried on with Guru only. I cannot believe the transformation, it's been amazing. The same week we noticed a massive difference in behaviour, the same Luna but much more chilled out and she's improved so much. We think this could be the difference in protein. She's always happy to wolf down her food and she has fewer but big solid poops!I cannot recommend this food enough! Finally a dog food that makes me and Luna happy!

We started feeding our two Spaniels Guru 6 Months ago and are amazed at the results. Our dogs didn't want to eat their dry kibble before and would refuse food. We were so worried about them and about their weight. We did some research about foods and looked on this website. After worrying for so long about their lack of interest to eat and their failing weight we can't tell you what a huge relief it was to find Guru. We ordered a sample and it arrived the next day. Our dogs devoured it and were so eager to actually eat for once. We contacted Guru and received such a warm and helpful response. They discussed our dogs diets and any allergies they had and we ordered our first bag. We did a really slow transition and monitored the dogs weight etc. Well wow!!!!! We can't tell you how relieved we have been. Their coats are glossy, their weight is now ideal, their breath and poop are as they should be and we are delighted.
Our dogs are our family and the worry before about their diet and weight was awful. Well no more now we've found Guru.
We could not recommend a company more and we have told all our friends and families. They are so helpful, professional and supportive. We don't normally write reviews but we just wanted to let them know what a difference they have made to us and our dogs. The vets were so pleased on their last health check and we will never change from Guru.
Your service and care is above and beyond.
Thank you Guru xxx

It's been hit and miss from day one with my Frenchies sensitive tum. I've tried top quality foods and have been feeding him a raw diet for the last 14 months or so, but we still have problems. I've stripped his diet right back and have started feeding him Guru for breakfast and raw for his evening meal. This is the advantage of guru, you can feed alongside a raw and since doing this we've had no squirts, he's gaining weight and he looks forward to meal times time. Totally recommend this product and have told many friends who feed poor quality kibble to give it a try.Des •8 years ago
We have two Australian Labradoodle's, Alfie is 5 and Dillon 2. They have both until recently been fed on a high quality dry kibble. However Dillon would seem disinterested at feeding time, and he started leaving food. So I decided to research again and discovered Cold Pressed Dog Food. I sent off for samples and Guru was the one which won Dillon over, he now looks forward to food time and always finishes his two daily meals. I save money each month as it is cheaper than the previous kibble they had, poo's are firm and don't seem to smell! Alfie and Dillon are more than happy with Guru and so are we. Lisa is always there for advice so if unsure give her an email or check out their web site, you won't be dissapointed.Shaz •8 years ago
At last!! A cold pressed dog food company I can rely on! I have fed my German Shepherd puppy on this stuff since I got her at 8 weeks. This has to be the best dog food around. She loves it either dry or mixed with warm water and absolutely adores the Road Trip Bones which are great when she is on the move. She is so happy on this food - and so am I as there are no messy, sloppy poos!! Worth every penny.
