Fresh dog food has been gaining popularity as more pet owners seek healthier and more natural options for their furry friends. What is Fresh Dog Food?

Fresh dog food aims to mimic the nutrition and quality of homemade meals for dogs. Unlike traditional dry or canned dog food, fresh options typically contain whole ingredients like meat, vegetables, and grains, without artificial additives or preservatives. The appeal lies in the promise of providing dogs with wholesome, nutritious meals similar to what their owners would prepare for themselves.

Storage and Convenience

One significant advantage of fresh dog food is its storage flexibility. While traditional options often require freezing or refrigeration, Years stands out by offering the convenience of room temperature storage, thanks to its sealed packaging. On the other hand, Different Dog and Butternut Box require freezing prior to opening, with subsequent refrigeration after opening. This distinction may influence your choice depending on your storage preferences and lifestyle.

Comparing the Contenders

Butternut Box: As the pioneer in the fresh dog food market, Butternut Box offers a budget-friendly option with prices starting at £2.95 per day for an average adult 14-kilo dog. While its ingredients list boasts quality components like ox heart and ox liver, concerns arise regarding the undisclosed percentages of these ingredients and the high proportion of legumes, primarily peas. Despite these drawbacks, Butternut Box remains a solid choice, earning an 87% rating.

Different Dog: With a focus on transparency and high-quality ingredients, Different Dog sets itself apart by clearly stating the percentage of offal in its recipes, such as 5% liver. Although it commands a higher price tag of £4.40 per day for the same dog size, its nutritional density and inclusion of nutrient-rich ingredients like spinach and carrot justify the cost. Different Dog achieves an impressive rating of 93%, making it a top contender in the fresh dog food market.

Years: The newest player in the fresh dog food scene, Years, offers clarity in ingredient selection and nutritional coverage. While some may find the amount of quinoa in its recipes slightly excessive, its overall quality earns it a joint top rating of 96%. Priced at £3.15 per day, Years strikes a balance between affordability and quality, making it an attractive option for discerning pet owners.

Cooking Methods

Each brand employs distinct cooking methods to preserve the nutritional integrity of their recipes. Different Dog showcases a manual cooking process resembling homemade preparation, while Butternut Box and Years opt for steam cooking, effectively sealing in nutrients without compromising on flavor or quality.

Conclusion

Choosing the right fresh dog food ultimately depends on your budget, storage preferences, and nutritional priorities. While Butternut Box offers affordability and convenience, Different Dog and Years excel in ingredient transparency and nutritional density. Regardless of your choice, rest assured that all three options provide wholesome, nutritious meals that prioritize your dog's health and well-being.

Boost freshly cooked dog food is recommended by a natural dog rearing site alongside Different Dog as an alternative to raw, however it doesn’t feature on your site. Can you please add it? It’s more cost effective than DD. I’m interested to see how it would be rated by AADF.

This is incorrect, re. Butternut Box. It is frozen, then defrosted in the fridge, then eaten.

Years, Different Dog and Butternut seem to be rated and discussed on AADF to the virtual exclusion of the thankfully increasing number of other fresh foods becoming available. It would be nice if more were covered - or at least listed - as some of the others aren't very well known and it takes quite a bit of online searching to find them.
